What can ten minutes of writing do for a child? Quite a lot. In a world where children are surrounded by screens and have shorter attention spans, writing gives them something very different. It gives them time to think without being entertained.
A simple ten-minute writing habit can encourage children to:
- Read more, because good writing begins with exposure to words, stories and ideas.
- Focus for longer, because writing requires them to stay with one thought and develop it.
- Use their imagination, because they are creating rather than consuming.
- Become comfortable without a device.
When children have interesting things to do beyond screens, they are less likely to see a device as the default answer to boredom.
That does not mean keeping technology out of their lives. It means helping them develop other ways to spend their time.
- A book
- A conversation
- A game
- A blank sheet of paper
And sometimes, just ten quiet minutes to write.
The goal is not perfect grammar or polished sentences.
The aim is to help children discover that their own thoughts can be interesting enough to explore. That is a habit worth building.
